Here we have a plane tiled with miniature versions of my image of Neptune.
The distortion was obtained by having a transparent sphere of ridiculously high index of refraction intersecting a regularly-tiled plane, and sticking out just a little in front of it. This is an example of how we can stretch the laws of Nature -- in this case, Snell's Law of refraction -- in our image synthesis implementations of them, to obtain striking, non-physical effects.
