A Fast Automobile

My 1994 Supra Turbo

All of my adult life I've been something of a motorhead; now I finally have a real sports car. (One I can't possibly work on myself.) This car is both beastly and luxurious; quite a combination. It's basically a Lexus SC300 with two sequential turbos and a great sports suspension. It's pretty nice-looking, but it must have the biggest butt ever put on a production automobile. That takes some getting used to.

For styling coups, check out the Arch of St. Louis / Monument to Testosterone spoiler on the back. They say it'll give me 84 lbs of downforce at 90 mph -- which I need like a hole in the head.

I've only taken it up to 135 mph, but it sure didn't take very long to get there. For some absurd reason, it's electronically limited to 159 mph, when it could top 180. "Why?" one must ask. But what the hell, 159 is probably faster than I'll ever want to go.

Turns out it's kinda hard to shift 320 hp, or more accurately, 300 ft-lbs of torque, gracefully. Actually, the shifter is the low point of the car -- the throw is a little long, and it sometimes clunks going into gear. The new RX-7 is way better in that department. "But this one has seven gears."

The twin turbos sing quite audibly -- or at least one of them does. Sounds cool. Surprisingly loud, though, for such a quiet car.

Leg room for the passenger behind the drivers seat is about minus 5 cm. You can wedge one adult passenger behind the other front seat.

Unexpected Bonus: It's got the Stereo System from Hell. I had a Pink Floyd in the CD one night, and Beth said "What's that? Sounds like water sloshing around in the car!" (I had just finished washing it.) What it was, was the rowboat oars in the beginning of "Momentary Lapse of Reason". I just let her sweat it for a bit, before I turned up the volume to show her where the sound was coming from... I never thought a car would be a good place to listen to music, but this is the best stereo system I've ever heard in a car, so maybe I've changed my mind. S'got a subwoofer, so I can cruise the downtown DC Rap Scene. Yeah, right.
