Windy Ridge is a two-year old contemporary home, which is sited just below the crest of a saddle in Knobley Mountain outside of New Creek, WV. The home sits at the center of the western property line, and the majority of the 58.2 acres slope down away from the house toward the East (the 75 acres added in 2005 now include the West side of the mountain) , providing unobstructed views to the South Branch Mountain at Romney, WV, some 20 miles distant. A 5 acre fruit orchard (apples, peaches, nectarines, pears, cherries, apricots, plums, etc.) lies adjacent and below the house, while the remainder of the land is deciduous hardwood forest (walnut, maple, oak. hickory, elm, locust, etc.). A large fenced garden is at the southwestern edge of the property, a few yards from the house.

The house site is terraced, so that both upper and lower levels have direct ground level access. The original house was a two-story ranch. This was gutted and the existing structure built in and around it. At the south end of the house is a four-story observation tower. This is connected to the house on the upper level at the living room. From the living room, the upper level rooms consist of a half-bath, entry way, family room, kitchen and dining room, master bedroom and bath, walk-in closet and laundry room, and a curved hallway providing direct access from the kitchen to the two-car garage at the north end of the residence. The garage has a separate workshop on the east end, plus a very large storage loft above, and gives access to the main deck, which in turn leads back to the dining room.

MASTER BEDROOM IS ON MAIN LEVEL... WINTER VIEW FROM MBR

LOWER LEVEL OFFICE COULD BE A BEDROOM

On the lower level, from the south, there is ground level access to the tower, a large covered parking/patio area beneath the raised living room, outdoor storage rooms, and then access to an office/bedroom, the lower hallway, media room, second office/bedroom, guest bedroom, three pantries, guest bath, mechanical room and, at the north end of the hall, a large unfinished recreation/hobby/storage room beneath the garage.

FRONT ENTRY BRIDGE AND REAR "VIEWING" BRIDGE

160-DEGREE VIEW FROM THE REAR VIEWING "BRIDGE" [of Mo's Rocket Range]
(click photo for a MUCH larger (195K) version)

The main entry to the home is on the upper level via a bridge from the parking area to the front door between the living room and the family room. There is a small deck in the front of the house off the entry bridge. Directly opposite the main entry door is the door to "the Bridge" (it once was a bridge!), which provides unparalleled views of the surrounding scenery to the east and south. There is a small deck on the south end of the house off the living room. The main deck, to the north, off the dining room, gives access to the garage and the lower ground level. Beneath this main deck is a similarly sized stone patio.

Windy Ridge  was designed by Robert M. Gurney, AIA, of Alexandria, VA, as the retirement home for the owners. To take full advantage of the spectacular views to the East and South, all the main living quarters are located on the eastern side of the house, while baths, hallways and storage rooms are on the western side. Approximately 70' of floor to ceiling insulated glass windows line the living room, family room and dining room walls. Both bedrooms and one office, the unfinished room beneath the garage, and even the shop in the garage have large picture windows with breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys to the East. In the second office/bedroom the view is through an eight foot tall sliding glass doorway. The top of the observation tower, of course, provides exceptional views in all directions, and was constructed intentionally to provide views of western sunsets. (And is THE one-of-a-kind place to be during lightning storms!)

SECOND OFFICE ON LL... BOTH HAVE OUTSIDE ENTRANCES
The owners worked with Mr. Gurney to design and build a very special home. The ceilings in the tower and living room, as well as walls in other rooms, are pine paneling recycled from the original house. There is approximately 3,000 sq ft of solid black walnut flooring from trees cut on the land and sawn by the owner (and then professionally kiln dried and milled, of course). Doors on the upper level are 8 feet high with single panes of insulated glass. The main entry door is a single unbroken sheet of stainless steel on the outside and on the inside has samples of all of the woods used throughout the house.
.
TOP QUALITY KITCHEN SURE TO PLEASE THE COOK
.
The kitchen has extra wide stainless steel countertops and top-of-the-line appliances; all of the lower kitchen cabinets have drawers for ease of access to utensils. The master bath has to be seen and used to be fully appreciated. The entire house is wired (CAT 5) for multiple phones, computers and video systems; a two-way direct satellite cable TV / Internet system is installed.
The house is air conditioned on the upper level. The entire house is heated by a propane fired boiler and a seven zone hot-water-baseboard heating system which includes radiant floor heating in the master bedroom, bath and other rooms. Water is provided on site by a 400' deep well; a water-softening system is connected. A septic tank handles the sewage. Lighting throughout the house is by recessed lights in the ceilings; exterior floodlights, operated from inside the house, provide 360 degree exterior lighting. There is a very efficient stone fireplace on the upper level in the family room, and a flue outlet for a wood-burning stove in a lower level office. The woods on the property, of course, are an unending source of fuel. Utilities (electric and propane) average $170 per month.

The house is located on the top of a saddle ridge of Knobley Mountain, exactly one mile from US Route 50. The nearest full-time resident neighbor is a half-mile away, and except for a deserted cabin, there are no houses within view other than those in the distant valley to the East: total privacy. Yet, it is very conveniently located: the local post office is 3 miles away, a 24-hour Super Walmart center 5 miles, the local hospital (in Keyser) is 7 miles, and the 24-hour Martin's supermarket is 8 miles away. The local towns (New Creek, Keyser, Petersburg, Cumberland, MD, etc.) provide all the necessary and unnecessary services for comfortable living.

The outstanding feature of the house is the fact of its being an extremely comfortable and livable home set amidst the extraordinary beauty of its surroundings. The unlimited view from all rooms provides an ever-changing panorama of nature at its best. The colors and shadings of the hills change not only from season to season but also from minute to minute as sunshine and shadow move across the ridges and valleys. In the spring redbuds bloom at the edge of the forest on all four sides; later, the fruit trees in the orchard bloom profusely; then wildflowers fill the meadow; the autumn colors defy description; the occasional snowfall gives a whole new aura to the view. Deer and turkey and other wildlife wander at will across the land in full and close-up view.

The house has won numerous awards for design excellence. In November 2000, it received the Virginia Foundation for Architecture's Visions for Architecture award for excellence in architecture. RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECT featured this house in its May 2001 issue, awarding it a design award for renovation and merit. It was one of the Winning Home Designs selected by the WASHINGTONIAN magazine featured in the June 2001 issue. It won the REMODELING magazine 2001 Renaissance Grand Award for Whole House Remodeling and was featured in the September issue of that magazine. The owner is not the only one who thinks it is a wonderful house.
